Studio Overiew
The FUNKtion Dance Complex offers classes that teach students a plethora of styles. We specialize in: Urban which includes; Popping, B-boying (breaking), Locking, House, Waacking, Vogue, Hip Hop(90s social/party dances), Street Jazz (choreography classes), and Industry Heels. We also offer traditional styles such as Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Kids Acro, Kathak Indian Dance and are adding more classes as the demand increases.
Our outlook is similar to that of college; If you pay good money for a college education, by the end of your senior year you should have been taught the knowledge you need in order to get a job. Our mentality is of a similar line of thought. If you are paying for a dance education then you should be given the tools that are required to make it in the dance world IF you would like to explore that option. If you are not looking for a career in dance then at least you have knowledge and skill set to use it as a strong means of character development or can use it if you ever desired to find a teaching position to help support college or what ever career option you choose.
Our OPEN/ DROP IN classes cater to the older dancer who is looking for a NY style class without the hassle of having to travel the distance or pay the extra costs. The open enrollment classes are the perfect option for the mature teen or adult who want to continue their training without the worry of a long term commitment. Classes will be conducted on a drop in, pay as you go basis, making it easier for those with busy schedules or who just want to add to their training.
Since we are a non-competition studio we instead go to dance conventions where our students can train under the industry’s hottest choreographers and instructors. If the students are trying to make it in the industry then they should be exposed to what will be expected of them when they work with such choreographers in the future. Conventions help to stress the value of continued training and technical growth, with less emphasis on focusing on just a competition dance.
FUNKtion strives to build a studio with a family oriented environment where they have put together a staff that has a profound respect for each other and appreciates each teacher’s genre and style. We encourage functioning in a group that works towards the common goal of educating our students. We stress positivity, creativity, and working to help students get past insecurities both inside the class and out. Our goal is to help each student strive to be their own individual best.
Dance is supposed to be empowering and fun so it is a requirement that our teachers stress positive reinforcement and good health as well as continue to train and be relevant in their genre to be able to educate properly with this ever changing dance industry.
We do value serving the community and have performance groups that will be doing performances for charity events and fundraisers as a way to give back as much as we can. This also teaches students that there’s value in the arts as they can heal, help, and inspire. Our performance groups will also have opportunities in industry based events as they learn and develop to pursue a career in dance. We will hold showcases in December and in June to show the progression of dance and the students growth.
